Recognition of the 4-H Livestock Judging Team State Championship

USU Extension Director Brooke Holgate introduced the 4-H Judging team and described the competition. Normally, teams are made up of four members, and the lowest score is dropped. This team only had three members, so every score counted. They judge both market and breeding animals. Each Judge shared their story and expressed gratitude to Brooke and her leadership. Each Commissioner commended them on the accomplishment and encouraged them to take the lessons learned into their adult lives.

This Day in History

Commissioner Miles described what happened this day in history. On July 24th, 1847, an exhausted group of Mormon pioneers led by Brigham Young entered Utah’s Salt Lake Valley after a grueling 1,000-mile journey from Nauvoo, Illinois. This marked the founding of what would become Salt Lake City and is commemorated annually in Utah as Pioneer Day. On July 27th, 1789, the US Congress established the Department of Foreign Affairs, later known as the State Department. In 1953, North Korea and the United Nations signed an armistice to stop fighting and divide Korea at the 38th parallel. In 1996, a bomb exploded at Atlanta Olympic Park, killing one and injuring 110. In 1909, Orville Wright successfully tested the Wright Military Flyer, the world’s first military airplane, with a record flight of 1 hour, 12 minutes, and 40 seconds, flying approximately 40 miles. In 1944, American troops regained control of Guam from Japanese forces, marking a turning point in the Pacific Theater. In 1964, the United States announced the deployment of an additional 5,000 military advisers to South Vietnam, escalating U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. In 1975, Alex Rodriguez, a baseball Hall of Fame member, was born.

Public Works Update

Public Works Director Mike Casper provided an update of ongoing and upcoming work. They are starting roadwork in Red Creek (CR 1). The work should be completed in a week or two. The paint was delivered, and striping should start soon. They have been preparing the new yard for the new fuel tanks. It rained last week, and a couple of areas experienced flooding, but the graders are out working those areas. The crusher will be moved to Arcadia. Commissioner Chugg commented on Moon Lake Road (CR 113), noting that a sign has been knocked down and that a couple of potholes need to be repaired. The parties discussed the rights-of-way for the road realignment in Roosevelt.
