DELAWARE COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY

Delaware County Flood Emergency

Press Briefing & Public Fact Sheet
UPDATED: AUGUST 12, 2026

CURRENT SITUATION

Delaware County is experiencing significant flooding, with the potential for serious and life-threatening conditions in flood-prone areas.

Residents along the White and Mississinewa Rivers, particularly east of Burlington and south of 12th Street in Muncie, should be prepared for significant flooding. River gauges are expected to reach Major Flood Stage.

If significant flooding is approaching your home, consider evacuating now — before rising water makes evacuation impossible. Do not wait until water reaches your home to make an evacuation decision.

Areas of Muncie have been significantly impacted by flooding, particularly in low-lying areas. Numerous homes have been surrounded by floodwaters, requiring first responders to conduct rescues. As of Wednesday, 15 people have been displaced and are currently being sheltered.

DELAWARE COUNTY TRAVEL ADVISORY
⚠ ORANGE WATCH LEVEL

Delaware County is currently under an ORANGE Watch Level Travel Advisory because of ongoing flooding. An Orange Watch Level means that conditions are threatening to the safety of the public.

During a Watch Level Travel Advisory:

  • Only essential travel is recommended, including travel to and from work or travel required for emergency situations.
  • Businesses, schools, government agencies, and other organizations should implement their emergency action plans.
  • Residents should avoid unnecessary travel and remain alert for changing conditions.
  • Never drive through flooded roadways. Turn around — don't drown.

EVACUATION INFORMATION

Residents in areas threatened by rising floodwaters should have an evacuation plan in place now. If you are told to evacuate, leave immediately. If flooding is approaching your home and you believe you may become trapped, do not wait for an official evacuation order to begin moving to a safe location.

Residents should:

  • Know where you will go if you need to evacuate.
  • Take essential medications, identification, important documents, and necessary supplies.
  • Make arrangements for pets and livestock.
  • Check on neighbors who may need assistance.
  • Avoid walking or driving through floodwater.
  • Follow instructions from emergency management and public safety officials.
