City Council met in public session on August 6, 2018. Here are the highlights:

STATUS REPORTS

Tribute to Harry G. Ebeling: Judy Cook and Leigh Turben: Former Mayor Judy Cook and Oakwood Historical Society President Leigh Turben spoke about Mr. Ebeling’s life and his passion for Oakwood history.

Proclamations – Mayor Duncan read a proclamation recognizing Saturday, August 11, 2018 as “Dorothy Lane Market Day”. Norman Mayne, DLM Owner; Jerry Post, DLM Oakwood Store Director; and Alex West, Oakwood DLM Front End Manager, spoke about the DLM 70th Anniversary event and received the proclamation.

Mayor Duncan then read proclamations designating September as “Prostate Cancer Awareness Month” and “National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month”. Dr. Sallie Wilson spoke about her involvement in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and the 2018 “Out of the Darkness Walk”.

Oakwood Pre-sale Property Inspection Program: Mayor Duncan shared that last month many Oakwood residents received two direct mail pieces from a group called Ohio REALTORS, which contained false information about the Oakwood pre-sale inspection program for residential properties. The Oakwood pre-sale program was established in 1968 and is especially important in a community like Oakwood, which despite its aging stock of homes, many of which are 75-100 years old, continues to be the premiere residential community in the Miami Valley. Oakwood property maintenance regulations are intended to provide for public health, safety and welfare. By ensuring the properties meet certain minimums each time they are transferred, the pre-sale inspection program helps to prevent homes from catching fire, collapsing or becoming unsightly or unsafe. City Council and City staff appreciates the numerous comments received from local realtors and citizens expressing support of this unique program to ensure that Oakwood homes continue to rise in value. For the past two and a half years, 75-80% of Oakwood homes sold above Montgomery County’s appraised value.

LEGISLATION

Oakwood City Council approved the following legislation:

  • A Resolution to grant approval of an amendment to the approved master plan for the Sugar Camp and Pointe Oakwood development, affecting the southwest portion of said development, Mayor Duncan
    PUBLIC HEARING
    • Public hearing to consider an application submitted by Synergy Building Systems, on behalf of Russell Wealth Management, for the construction of a 16,600 sf, 2-story office building on the 4.3 acre parcel located east of Sugar Camp Circle, west of the Pointe Oakwood residential development, and north of W. Schantz Avenue.

    The hearing included a staff report and testimony from a representative of Synergy Building Systems, and from one Oakwood resident. By a vote of 4-0, with one member recusing himself, said request was approved. This decision was memorialized in Resolution No. 1847.

  • An Ordinance to consider proposed Zoning Code amendments intended to update the variance standards.
  • An Ordinance to establish procedures and standards for the operation of mobile food trucks.
  • An Ordinance to amend existing Section 725.01, Street Sales Prohibited Except in Business Districts, of the Oakwood Business Regulation Code.
  • A Resolution to authorize certification of delinquent charges for cutting noxious weeds.
STAFF REPORT

Public Safety Presentation: Chief Alan Hill, Public Safety Director, referenced a PowerPoint presentation and updated Council on the following topics: Capital Equipment; Irving Avenue Traffic Enforcement; Criminal Cases of Note; Personnel Changes; RadarSign; Crime Mapping Update; and Citizens Police Academy.
