City Council met in public session on February 5, 2018. Here are the highlights.
Council meeting minutes were approved for the January 2, 2018 regular, work session and executive session.
STATUS REPORTS – Mayor Duncan shared that he will be delivering his State of the City Address at the March City Council meeting.
VISITORS
Sam Nicholaisen, 265 Volusia Avenue, shared that he chose to honor past, present and future field commanders and band directors as his Eagle Scout project. A plaque, located outside of the Oakwood High School band room, honors all past field commanders and directors, while leaving room for names to be added through 2070.
Mayor Duncan wished Mr. Nicholaisen luck on earning his Eagle Scout rank.
Gary Haines, 223 Oakwood Avenue, shared that he is the crossing guard at the intersection of Far Hills Avenue and Park Avenue. He asked if crosswalk signs could be placed on the poles going both northbound and southbound to alert traffic of the crosswalk.
Mayor Duncan asked City Manager Norbert Klopsch to look into this request. City Council thanked Mr. Haines, and all crossing guards, for their service to the Oakwood community.
LEGISLATION – NONE
CITY MANAGER’S COMMENTS – Mr. Klopsch provided an update on the following items:
The annual Sidewalk, Curb and Driveway Apron Project will take place in the area bounded by Far Hills Avenue, Aberdeen Avenue, Shroyer Road and East Drive. Public Works Foreman David Shuey will begin marking the sidewalks and residents will be notified in April of their responsibilities.
Jennifer Wilder will begin a new position of Director of Personnel and Properties on Monday, February 12. This position was created at the end of last year when the assistant city manager position was removed. Mrs. Wilder has 18 years of experience in local government and comes to Oakwood from the city of Centerville. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Miami University and a Master of Business Administration from Wright State. She will be Oakwood’s human resources director and will oversee all matters relating to public and private properties in Oakwood including residential property, commercial property, property maintenance, property improvements (zoning), property development (planning) and property beautification. Mr. Klopsch shared that he will introduce Mrs. Wilder at the March City Council meeting.
COUNCIL COMMENTS
- Councilmember Anne Hilton thanked Crossing Guard Gary Haines for his service to the community. She added that he not only helps the kids with crossing the street, but he also shovels snow and rakes leaves to ensure safety.
- Councilmember Rob Stephens reported that the annual New Resident Breakfast is on Saturday, March 17 at the Oakwood Community Center. He encouraged all new residents to attend.
- Mayor Bill Duncan shared that both he and Vice Mayor Byington may be unable to attend the March 5 Council meeting, so the meeting may need to be rescheduled to Monday, March 12. Once the date has been finalized, the meeting schedule will be communicated to the media and placed on the city’s website.
