Job Title: Fire Captain

SUMMARY

Supervises and coordinates activities of company of Fire Fighters assigned to specific firehouse.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Causes objectives of the Fire Department to be achieved at the Fire Station level.

  • Ensures that individual units provide quality service to the public in fire suppression, fire prevention, emergency medical services and public education.
  • Manages all department programs at the company level.
  • Inspects station house, buildings, grounds, and facilities, and examines fire trucks and equipment, such as ladders and hoses, to ensure compliance with departmental maintenance standards.
  • Responds to fire alarms and determines from observation nature and extent of fire, condition of building, danger to adjacent buildings, and source of water supply, and directs fire fighting crews accordingly.
  • Trains subordinates in use of equipment and methods of extinguishing all types of fires.
  • Evaluates efficiency of personnel.
  • Compiles report of each call, listing location, type, probable cause, estimated damage, and disposition.
  • Responds to emergency calls to render first aid.
  • Supervises and coordinates activities of fire companies fighting multiple alarm fire until relieved by superiors.
  • Writes and submits proposal for new equipment or modification of existing equipment to superiors.
  • Performs related duties as required.

  • Interact effectively with members of the company, department managers and the public.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of the requisite knowledges, skill and abilities. A typical way to obtain these would be:

Option 1

  1. Four (4) years full time suppression experience in the Firefighter series*.
  2. Associate Degree in Fire Science or Fire Technology.
  3. San Rafael Fire Department Engineer Certification or Engineer Rank.
  4. Completion of NWCG S-231 and S-290 curriculum.
  5. State Board of Fire Services Fire Officer Certification.
