Job Title: Firefighter-Paramedic

SUMMARY

Performs firefighting, fire prevention, and paramedic duties; responds to emergency calls, protects life and property, and renders basic and advanced emergency medical care.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Perform firefighting and fire prevention activities in protecting life and property, including rescues, ventilation, extinguishment, overhaul and salvage activities
  • Perform advanced emergency medical services within the guidelines of Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic certification and Marin County Emergency Medical Services Authority.
  • Drive and operate fire apparatus and equipment; set up hoses and ladders and use firefighting equipment to fight fires.
  • Maintain skills, knowledge, and required certifications through participation in fire training sessions and skill maintenance programs
  • Maintain firefighting and EMS equipment, fire station and related grounds, facilities and supplies in a clean, orderly and usable condition
  • Conduct fire prevention and life safety inspections
  • Participate in community relations activities and public education events
  • Maintain records and documentation of activities and prepare reports
  • Perform related duties as required

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Fire prevention and suppression techniques, operation of fire equipment, department regulations and procedures, basic and advanced emergency medical services.

ABILITY TO:

Operate fire apparatus. Perform a wide variety of basic and advanced emergency medical care procedures. Work nights and weekends. Meet department physical requirements. Establish and maintain effective relationships with coworkers. Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of the requisite knowledge, skill and abilities. A typical way to obtain these would be:

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent and 21 semester units of college coursework
  • Completion of the CA State Board of Fire Services Firefighter I curriculum (Academy Graduate). One year of experience as a paid Firefighter is accepted in lieu of the completion of the Firefighter I curriculum
