Job Title: Library Aide

SUMMARY

Under general supervision, performs routine customer service, clerical and circulation work in the library, and performs related duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The Library Aide position is an entry-level classification in library services. Under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform a variety of duties related to customer service, clerical, and circulation work in the library.

EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The typical job functions of the classification may include, but are not limited to, the functions below and are subject to changes in operational necessity.

  • Greet patrons upon entry to the library.
  • Respond to questions from the public, providing basic information and instruction on self-service options (such as self-checkout machines and catalog stations), location questions for materials and services, and available technology and databases, referring patrons to appropriate staff for more complex questions or service needs.
  • Help patrons with basic questions related to account management.
  • Understand and enforce library guidelines and policies to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all library visitors.
  • Maintain proper order and neatness of the library public areas: tidy chairs, tables, and furniture, and arrange materials, shelves, and display fixtures.
  • Perform basic work related to the circulation of materials both physically and in the electronic integrated library system database.
  • Shelve books and other library materials according to the library’s classification system.
  • Perform established opening and closing routines.
  • Assist in a support capacity with library programs, events, and outreach.
  • Follow all safety rules and protocols; take appropriate action as required to identify and correct safety and security hazards including but not limited to utilizing and applying de-escalation techniques and practices; and report safety and security concerns in a timely and appropriate manner to their supervisor.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
