Job Title:

Librarian I/II

SUMMARY

Performs varied professional library work, including collection development of library materials; development of library services, programs, outreach, and marketing; technical services work; assisting patrons with basic and complex informational requests; and performing related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

Librarian I is the entry-level in the professional librarian series. The Librarian I is expected to be proficient with library systems and applications; to assist with collection development, cataloging, development of library services, programs, outreach, marketing, and technical services; and to provide public services to patrons.

Librarian II is the journey-level in the professional librarian series and is expected to independently perform the full range of duties as listed in this job description and supervise paraprofessional, technical, and temporary staff as assigned.

Positions in the Librarian I/II series are flexibly staffed; progression to the higher level is dependent on (i) management affirmation that the position is performing the full range of duties assigned to the classification; (ii) satisfactory work performance; (iii) the incumbent meeting the minimum qualifications for the classification including any licenses and certifications; and (iv) management and budget approval for progression to the higher level.

EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The typical job functions of the classification may include, but are not limited to, the functions below and are subject to changes in operational necessity.

  • Provide a range of services to patrons, including complex reference and readers' advisory; circulation and patron account requests; and advanced assistance with accessing library materials, technology, and resources.
  • Provide input on policies and procedures relating to library services.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging trends in technology, reference services, and librarianship.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of library programs, events, volunteers, and services.
  • Organize and lead outreach visits outside the library at events and to community partners to present and promote library services.
  • May evaluate, select, and order books and media items for one or more collection areas in the library, and evaluate items for withdrawal from the library collection.
  • Support and provide content for the development and implementation of marketing strategies.
  • May lead complex technical services work.
  • May provide direction, training, and support to paraprofessional staff in one or more of the following areas: collection development, circulation, technical services, programs and services, events, outreach, and marketing.
  • May supervise paraprofessional, technical or temporary staff.
  • Assist with the administration and organization of core library services, planning, organizing, and coordinating library-wide activities.
