This Day in History

Chairman Miles told what happened this day in history. The Dakota War of 1862 began in Minnesota. In 1896, the Klondike Gold Rush began. In 1943, during World War II, U.S. General George S. Patton and his 7th Army arrived in Messina, Sicily, hours before British Forces, winning the unofficial “Race to Messina” and completing the Allied conquest of Sicily. This event demonstrated Patton’s strategic skill and contributed to the Allied advance in Europe. In 1998, President Bill Clinton became the first sitting president to testify before the Office of Independent Counsel as the subject of the grand jury.

Discussion & Consideration to Award Bid for the 2000 West Overlay Project

Brock Harrison with Jones & DeMille Engineering presented a bid schedule and explained that discussions with the other entity are still ongoing. He recommended that the County award the base bid, its portion of the bid. The parties discussed the bid options and the other entity's delay. Commissioner Chugg made a motion to accept the base bid from Staker and Parson Companies dba: Burdick Materials for $1,843,770.00 from Fund 41. Commissioner Killian seconded the motion. Commissioner Chugg voted aye, Commissioner Killian voted aye, and Commissioner Miles voted aye. The motion passed.

Public Works Update

Public Works Director Mike Casper provided an update of ongoing and upcoming work. They started paving 6000 West last week. There was some flooding on Upper Red Creek (CR 1). The parties discussed the repairs. Yellowstone Canyon also saw heavy rain. He has sent graders there today. SSD #2 is working to purchase the buildings for the road realignment inRoosevelt. The parties discussed needed repairs on Pole Line Road (CR 56). They will start chip sealing on East River Road (CR 79)next week. Director Casper spoke to one of the hauling companies about using a different route. He thanked Commissioner Chugg for the contact information.

Discussion with the State Courts for the Replacement of the Justice Court Judge

James Peters, the Justice Court Administrator at the Utah State Courts, presented information about hiring a new judge for the Duchesne Justice Court. The County received the resignation letter from the current Justice Court Judge. The position will be advertised for 30 days. The AOC and Duchesne County will form a nominating commission; the commission will review applications and interview potential nominees. There is a 10-day public comment period. The Commission Chair will select the finalists. County
