A copy of the resolution, having been placed on the desks of each member of Council prior to introduction, was read by title.
Mayor Duncan explained that the Solid waste management districts in Ohio are required to periodically update and maintain a 5-year waste management plan for their district. These plans must be reviewed and approved by Ohio EPA as well as a majority of the municipalities and townships within each district.
The Montgomery County Solid Waste District has adopted a draft plan which has already been reviewed by, and incorporates feedback from, Ohio EPA. District staff presented the plan to Oakwood City Council at a work session last week and Council believes the plan is in the best interests of the City. This resolution will formalize Oakwood’s approval of the Montgomery County Solid Waste District plan, as presented to and adopted by the Solid Waste Management Policy Committee (SWMPC) on February 5, 2024.
Thereupon, it was moved by Mayor Duncan and seconded by Vice Mayor Byington that the resolution be passed.
Upon call of the roll on the question of the motion, the following vote was recorded:
There being five (5) yea votes and no (0) nay votes thereon, said resolution was declared duly passed and it was so ordered.
CITY MANAGER’S COMMENTS – Mrs. Smiddy reported the following:
The annual New Resident Breakfast is at 9:30 a.m. this Saturday, March 8. This event welcomes and connects new residents with city staff, local resources, and fellow community members.
City staff is finalizing a Request for Proposal for the management and maintenance of Gardner Pool through 2027.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on Thursday, March 6, to celebrate the addition of an all-electric police patrol vehicle.
Mrs. Smiddy recognized the Oakwood employees with March birthdays and work anniversaries.
Mrs. Smiddy congratulated the Oakwood High School Varsity Boys Basketball team.
COUNCIL COMMENTS
Mrs. Jackson commented on Oakwood snow sculptor Dave Chesar, who was awarded third-place honors in the World Class category for the second year in a row at a snow sculpting competition in Frankenmuth, Michigan. Mr. Chesar shared information and images of the snow sculpture.
Mrs. Turben recognized the Oakwood High School Academic Decathlon Team for winning first place in the Ohio Academic Decathlon Regional Competition. She also congratulated the Oakwood Junior High School Power of the Pen team for winning the 2024 Ohio State Championship and Oakwood High School for earning first place in the Ohio Speech & Debate State Championship.
Mr. Stephens welcomed Public Safety Officer Rothenberger and congratulated Mayor Duncan on being the longest-serving mayor in Oakwood’s history.
Vice Mayor Byington also congratulated Mayor Duncan.
Mayor Duncan thanked everyone for the surprise gathering and honor.
