The Oakwood Public Safety Department will host its fourth Citizens Police Academy (CPA) in September 2022. The CPA is a 10-week program that meets for two hours one night per week covering the following topics: Safety Department Introduction / Orientation; Patrol Operations; Traffic Enforcement; Use of Force; Active Shooter Training; Evidence Collection and Processing; and Fire Prevention / Education. The CPA is free of charge and is open to any Oakwood resident or individual working within the city of Oakwood. Chief Hill shared that the September program is already full.
Mrs. Turben asked if the Oakwood Public Safety Department would be aware of calls to the 988 Hotline that were made in Oakwood.
Chief Hill explained that Crisis Now and the 988 Hotline operate independently of local public safety services.
Mayor Duncan thanked Chief Hill for his report. He stated that Oakwood has the best Public Safety Department in the state of Ohio

CITY MANAGER'S COMMENTS
Mr. Klopsch agreed with Mayor Duncan's comment that Oakwood has the finest Public Safety Department in Ohio. He thanked City staff present for working collaboratively and for the vital parts they play that are integral to the City's operations.
The annual asphalt repaving project is scheduled to begin no later than August 11. Weather permitting, the work should take around two weeks and should be completed before school starts. The project includes a number of residential streets and a series of alleys primarily in the southeast part of Oakwood. In terms of traffic, the street with the largest impact is W. Schantz Avenue from the west corporation line with Kettering to Far Hills Avenue. A list of streets to be repaved is available on the City's website.
A ribbon cutting ceremony was conducted last week for the new pickleball courts at Orchardly Park. There are two publicly accessible pickleball courts available.
Gardner Pool has had another good pool season. In the fall after the pool closes, the entire Gardner Pool deck will be completely reconstructed. The existing deck is about 40 years old and is in need of replacement. Unfortunately, due to the length of time to complete the work, the pool will be closed right after Labor Day and this year's Dog Splash is cancelled. The Dog Splash event will return next year.
Mayor Duncan commended his fellow Councilmembers for setting a productive and positive tone at the top of the Oakwood organization.
COUNCIL COMMENTS –
Mr. Stephens recognized Leisure Services Director Carol Collins and the Leisure Department staff, specifically Horticulturist Brian Caldwell, for working hard to keep the City looking beautiful. He commented that Mr. Caldwell is always outside physically working on things like trimming bushes, cutting lawns, and laying mulch to maintain all of the city-owned properties.
Vice Mayor Byington encouraged everyone to attend the Ice Cream Social on Sunday, August 14 from 3:30 – 7 p.m. at Shafor Park. He also encouraged people to get out and vote tomorrow on Election Day.
Mayor Duncan shared that he attended an exciting Gala of Hope event at Carillon Park that raised $1.7 million for cancer research.
