The Council of the city of Oakwood, State of Ohio, met in a work session at 6:30 p.m. in the conference room of the city of Oakwood, 30 Park Avenue, Oakwood, Ohio, 45419. Council then met in a regular session at 7:30 p.m., in the council chambers of the city of Oakwood.

The Mayor, Mr. William Duncan, presided, and the Clerk of Council, Ms. Lori Stacel, recorded. Mayor Duncan opened the meeting by asking all present to participate in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Mrs. Hilton advised Council she had read the meeting minutes of the May 1, 2017 regular session and work session. Mrs. Hilton reported she found the minutes correct and complete. Therefore, it was moved by Mrs. Hilton and seconded by Mr. Stephens that the minutes of the sessions of Council aforementioned be approved as written and the reading thereof at this session be dispensed with. Upon a viva voce vote on the question of the motion, same passed unanimously and it was so ordered.

Mike Wenclewicz Retirement – City Manager Norbert Klopsch recognized the recent retirement of Assistant Public Works Director Mike Wenclewicz. Mike was hired in 1980 and was a remarkable employee for 36 years. He started as a General Service Worker, and was promoted to Maintenance Worker, Foreman, and in 1994 to Assistant Service Director, a title later changed to Assistant Public Works Director. Mike held an Ohio EPA water distribution license and was responsible for the entire Oakwood water distribution system and backflow devices. He had a unique skill of being able to interact very effectively with people in difficult situations. Before coming to Oakwood, Mike served our country in the U.S. Navy, worked at the Hewitt Soap Factory and earned his associates degree in industrial engineering from Sinclair College. City employees gathered for a luncheon on Mike’s last day and one of the highlights of the luncheon was the presence of two former Service Directors, R.C. Reece and John Chain. R.C. worked for Oakwood from 1959 until his retirement in 1984. John worked for Oakwood from 1976 until his retirement in 2000. R.C. and John interviewed and selected Mike for employment back in 1980.

Mayor Duncan thanked Mr. Wenclewicz for his service.

Mr. Klopsch recognized two city employees in the audience who were here when Mike started his career in Oakwood. Assistant Finance Director Alice Young, who has been with the city for 39 years, and Leisure Services Director Carol Collins, who has been with the city for 42 years.

Oakwood High School Academic Decathlon Team – Vice Mayor Byington shared that he is very proud of the Academic Decathlon Team. He read a Proclamation recognizing the Academic Decathlon Team for being the Division III National Champion at the United States Academic Decathlon National Competition in Madison, Wisconsin on April 20-22. The team competed against the best schools in the nation, and won the team’s 6th consecutive National title, while also ranking third overall. Mayor Duncan then distributed the Proclamation to each student and to Coach Lori Morris.
