community. Flags were sold as a fundraiser this year by the Oakwood Academic Decathlon Team. This will also be done the 4th of July weekend and Labor Day weekend.
The 2017 Family Movie Night at Old River premieres the movie ‘The Lego Batman Movie’ on Friday, July 21.
The city of Oakwood took possession of the Hollinger Memorial Tennis Club in late 2016. The Oakwood Community Center is responsible for collecting all monetary donations and membership revenue for the club. To date, there have been 65 memberships sold, including one new member and one trial membership. The Oakwood Community Center is also collecting registration forms and fees for the annual Al Barbadora Tournament to be held on June 14-17, 2017.
The Oakwood Community Center will be offering the following summer camps: OCC for 3’s, Irish Dance Camp, Camp Shafor, Kiddie Camp, Skyhawks Sports Camps, Lacrosse Camp, Camp Hodge Podge, Dance Camps, and Kidz Home Alone & Better Babysitters.
For the 36th consecutive year, Ohio was recognized as the nation’s leader in Tree City USA communities with 243 participating cities, villages and townships. In 2016, Ohioans planted more than 27,000 trees, pruned more than 81,000 trees, volunteered more than 50,000 hours in urban forestry programs, and invested a combined total of $40.8 million toward urban forestry efforts. Oakwood received a 35 year award as a Tree City USA city at the Tree City USA ceremony.
CITY MANAGER’S COMMENTS – Mr. Klopsch provided an update on the following items:
Mr. Klopsch thanked Leisure Services Director Carol Collins for her excellent work. With everything currently in full bloom, the beauty of the city certainly shows and that is a result of Carol and her staff.
Mr. Klopsch shared that the city has retained many long-time employees, and that is a direct result of Personnel Director Jay Weiskircher finding good, quality employees. The city also has great leadership and instills good work ethic in new employees.
The Shroyer Road construction in Oakwood is scheduled to begin around Monday, July 3. Two construction message boards will be placed and activated this week to alert motorists and pedestrians of pending construction. The signs will be located near Carmels on the north end and near Speedway on the south end.
The major repair work on Ridgeway Road is completed. There will be some additional work further south on Ridgeway Road later in the summer. At some point in mid to late summer, Miami Valley Lighting will replace the old street lights along Ridgeway.
As part of the 2017 Sidewalk, Curb and Driveway Apron Project, the sidewalk repair work is underway on Far Hills now that school is out over the summer.
The 2017 leaf mulch program was successful. The quality of the mulch was some of the best that the city has ever obtained.
Mr. Klopsch made a plea to the Oakwood community to keep debris out of the street. A press release will be distributed to help communicate this information. He explained that except for the 10-week fall leaf collection season, debris of any sort placed on the street is prohibited. The debris can cause safety issues, negatively impact the appearance of Oakwood neighborhoods, and negatively affects the storm sewer system and downstream waterways. A new enforcement program will be implemented, and when a violation is found, the city will leave a door hanger directing the property owner to remove the debris from the roadway within 72 hours. If the debris is not removed within 72 hours, the Public Works Department will remove the debris and charge the property owner with a special pick-up. Each property owner is entitled to two free special pick-ups per year. Additional pick-ups thereafter will be billed to the property owner at $100 each.
COUNCIL COMMENTS
Vice Mayor Byington shared that the Oakwood Farmers’ Market opened this past Saturday and will be open each Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through the end of September. He encouraged people to come out and visit.
Mayor Duncan shared that the City Manager of Centerville, Greg Horn, will be retiring after 25 years and both he and Mr. Klopsch will be attending the retirement celebration. He also shared that he will attend an upcoming event at Wright Patterson Air Force Base that will include the
