How are my property taxes collected and who receives my residential property tax dollars?

The amount you pay in property taxes is a function of the assessed value of your property and the property tax millage for our city. The residential total effective millage rate used for 2025 property tax collections is 85.22, as compared to the 2024 residential total effective millage rate of 81.75. The total effective millage can be broken into two components, as follows:

  • Inside millage (non-voted) – the tax rate imposed by governmental bodies without the need for a vote by its citizens. Inside millage is limited to 10 mills and is divided between Montgomery County (17%), Oakwood City Schools (47%), and the City of Oakwood (36%).
  • Outside millage (approved by voters) – the tax rate proposed by government entities (e.g., county, city, schools, Wright Library, Sinclair, Human Services) and approved by citizen vote.

The organizations shown below share the current total effective millage of 81.75. Based on this millage distribution, the property taxes paid by Oakwood residents in 2024 are calculated.
